The Athletic Department Hosts Annual Jersey Blues Athletic Awards Banquet

Tinton Falls, NJ- The athletic department hosted it's sixth annual Jersey Blues Athletic Awards Banquet dinner at the Double Tree by Hilton Hotel in Tinton Falls. Student-athletes were recognized for their excellence on the playing field as well as in the classroom.

Major Award Winners:

The 2017-18 Scholar-Athlete of the Year award goes to a male and female sophomore with the highest GPA.  In the female category, the department awarded Jordan Grillo, from women's soccer. Grillo continued her classroom domination through her sophomore campaign earning her degree with a 4.00 GPA. 

Baseball's Brandon Rivera, who finished the year with a 3.64 GPA, earned the male scholar-athlete of the year distinction. Rivera is a criminal justice major.


The 2017-2018 Female Athlete of the Year, Katrina Hand from softball and women's volleyball, earned first team All-Region and All-GSAC honors in both sports and was named to the All-Tournament team for the NJCAA national softball tournament. In addition, Hand received the 2018 NGWSD Award (national girls and women's sports day).

Men's basketball saw captain Matthew Ringel take the 2017-2018 Male Athlete of the Year award. Ringel led his team to an undefeated GSAC title , Region XIX championship and NJCAA national championship. Ringel was also named as an NJCAA All-Tournament team honoree.

Eric Malmros, Senior Specialist-Facilities, was awarded 2018 Most Outstanding Brookdalian. Eric continues to support the athletic department, athletic programs, coaches and student-athletes by maintaining the indoor and outdoor playing surfaces while combining his efforts for projects that include all of the banners and plaques displayed around the Robert J. Collins arena.

In years past, the Sixth Man award has been a person who was an integral part of the athletic department – without actually competing. The 2018 recipient, volunteer field specilaist John Fluta, embodies the sixth man because he supports our programs and is constantly looking for new ways to assist with our outdoor facilites. He worked tirelessly throughout the spring season, making sure our baseball and softball fields were ready for competition.
